About the conference and community

ACM UbiComp, the International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing, is the premier venue for presenting research on ubiquitous and pervasive computing. It brings together researchers and practitioners from computer science, engineering, design and the social and health sciences to explore how computing can be woven into everyday life, from wearable, mobile and embedded devices to sensing, context-aware systems and the new interactions and applications they enable.

The conference grew out of the Handheld and Ubiquitous Computing (HUC) and Pervasive conference series, which merged in 2013. Its research is published in the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT), and it is held jointly with the ACM International Symposium on Wearable Computers (ISWC).

The UbiComp community is a welcoming, global and interdisciplinary group, and this Steering Committee oversees the conference series on its behalf: choosing venues, guiding its evolution and sustaining awards and other community efforts.

About

History of the conference series

  1. 1999

Handheld and Ubiquitous Computing (HUC) is held in Karlsruhe, Germany.

  2. 2000

HUC is held again, in Bristol, UK.

  3. 2001

The conference changes its name to the International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing and is held in Atlanta, USA.

  4. 2002

A conference series on Pervasive Computing is established, with the inaugural conference in Zurich, Switzerland. It continues through 2012.

  5. 2012

The community decides to merge the Pervasive Computing and Ubiquitous Computing conferences, to offer a single venue for the leading worldwide research in Pervasive and Ubiquitous computing.

  6. 2013

The merged conference debuts in Zurich.

  7. 2017

Content for the UbiComp paper tracks is drawn from papers published in the new journal Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable, and Ubiquitous Technologies (PACM IMWUT).

Steering Committee

Responsibilities

The Steering Committee is responsible for the following:

  • Promoting and maintaining the UbiComp conference as the premiere venue for researchers
  • Ensuring the highest quality for the contents of the event
  • Deciding where the UbiComp conference is held each year
  • Providing advice to the current and future chairs of the UbiComp conference
  • Resolving general issues involved with the UbiComp conference
  • Running the 10-year best paper selection process
  • Awarding the outstanding student award
Membership

How members join

At most three representatives from each completed conference join the SC shortly after the conference, with a five year term. Typically, the representatives for a conference are chosen from the General and Technical Program chairs. If there are more than 3 volunteers from a conference, the SC will decide on who to take on (see Voting Process below).

Additional members include senior editors of the PACM IMWUT Editorial Board and the Chair and Vice Chair of the ISWC Steering Committee. These conference representatives are all voting members of the SC.
