Call for Papers UCAI'24: 5th Workshop on User-Centered Artificial Intelligence
The fifth Workshop on User-Centered Artificial Intelligence UCAI ’24 (https://ucai-sig.org/events/ucai24/) will be held in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy, in conjunction with the 2024 ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (https://www.um.org/umap2024/). The workshop is organized by the working group of the GI Section on Human-Computer Interaction, the SIG Nutzerzentrierte Künstliche Intelligenz (NKI).
Abstract
The proliferation of AI-based techniques poses a range of new challenges for the design and engineering of intelligent and adaptive systems since they tend to act as black boxes and do not offer the user sufficient transparency, control, and interaction opportunities, which are considered major goals of user-centered design in the HCI field. The 5th Workshop on User-Centered Artificial Intelligence (UCAI ‘24), held in conjunction with the 32nd ACM Conference on User Modeling Adaptation and Personalization, aims at sharing and discussing recent developments at the intersection of HCI and AI, and at exploring novel methodological, technical, and interaction approaches. The half-day workshop will focus on knowledge exchange, networking, and discussion, for which the accepted papers will serve as a point of departure.
Important Dates
• Submission deadline: April 28th, 2024
• Notification: May 8th, 2024
• Camera-ready deadline: May 16th, 2024
• Conference: July 1-4, 2024
Submissions
All submissions to the workshop should use the same ACM template (single-column format) and formatting adopted by the main UMAP conference.
The templates and instructions are available from ACM (https://authors.acm.org/proceedings/production-information/taps-production-workflow).
Papers can be submitted through EasyChair by selecting the track associated with UCAI (https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=umap24).
We solicit submissions in the following category:
• provocation and position papers of 2 pages
• short research papers of up to 7 pages in length (excluding references)
Topics of Interest
• transparent and explainable AI-based systems
• algorithmic affordance and interaction affordance
• personalization, recommendation and adaptation
• UI paradigms for interacting with intelligent algorithms
• presentation and interaction design for AI-based systems
• user control of intelligent algorithms
• mixed-initiative interaction
• user-centric evaluation of AI-based systems
• ethical and legal aspects of AI-based systems
• folk theories and user beliefs about AI-based systems
• techniques to audit AI-based systems
• hybrid intelligence systems
• effects of generative AI models on research, practice, and education
• application of AI-based systems to predict human states and behaviors
Registration and Publication
Each accepted workshop paper must be accompanied by a distinct full author registration, completed by the early registration date cut-off. Each accepted workshop paper can be presented either in person or online and will be included in the conference adjunct proceedings. The official publication date is when the proceedings are made available in the ACM Digital Library. This date may be up to two weeks before the first day of UMAP 2024. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
