Dear colleagues,

RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) offers an exciting PhD position
in programming abstractions and run-time support for body computing.
The student will be enrolled at Uppsala University and supervised by
Luca Mottola and Thiemo Voigt.

Project Description
Body computing seeks to advance sciences related to the study of human
bodies with the use of information technologies. Wearable technology
such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, implanted devices such as
muscle stimulators, and brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) can detect,
analyze, and transmit information concerning body signals, such as
vital signs or ambient data, and allow immediate biofeedback to the
person. For example, BMIs and muscle stimulators can be used to
stimulate limbs that lost contact with the brain, providing tactical
sensing for feedback of touch. Body area networks (BANs) allow to
exchange information depending on application requirements. The
diversity of device architectures, available resources, programming
interfaces, and computational semantics makes it challenging to
develop body computing applications. Therefore, this PhD project aims
to drastically increase the level of abstraction in software design
and implementation for body computing applications. The PhD student
will conceive programming abstractions that hide the distributed and
diverse nature of the computing platforms at stake, while making
communication among involved parties explicit only when required.
She/he will design and implement the necessary language tool-chain and
system-level techniques enabling an efficient execution of the
application logic across devices and regardless of environment
conditions

Requirements
The candidate should have (at the time of the start of the project) a
Master of Science degree in computer science or related areas relevant
to the PhD project topic. The ideal candidate will have hands-on
experience with programming languages, compiler technology, and
low-power embedded systems. Evidence of good communication skills,
good command of both spoken and written English, are required.

Application
Please apply until June 20, 2022 at
