*Abstract: *In this talk, we address the challenges in ubicomp systems for
nursing and caregiving domains. We firstly overview the ubicomp challenges
from scientific to practical, along with the social situations of the most
‘advanced’ aging country in the world. One of the characteristics is that
the services are mainly provided not based on self- or automated wellbeing,
but based on human-based ‘care’ activities, where the wellbeing of both
caretakers and caregivers is important. As one of the approaches utilizing
the characteristics, we introduce our research on integrating human
activity recognition and nursing care records on smartphones [IMWUT2019],
followed by the deployment challenge to care facilities by the start-up
company AUTOCARE LLC. Also, we introduce our research on maximizing the
quality of the dataset by applying active learning and gamification
concepts [IMWUT2021], utilizing additional sensors only in training phases
[ISWC2021], and automating the records by dialogue systems [APAMI2020]. The
developed smartphone app FonLog is highly flexible and usable, so we can
utilize the system for many kinds of wellbeing research. We will introduce
some examples such as predicting the status of Parkinson’s diseases
[AppliedSciences2021], or the dataset for predicting office workers’ work
engagement from daily activities [ABC2021].
*About WellComp 2021*
With the advancements in ubiquitous computing, ubicomp technology has
deeply spread into our daily lives, including office work, home and
house-keeping, health management, transportation, or even urban living
environments. Furthermore, beyond the initial metric of computing, such as
“efficiency” and “productivity”, the benefits that people (users) benefit
on a well-being perspective based on such ubiquitous technology has been
greatly paid attention in recent years. In our first “WellComp” (Computing
for Well-being) workshop, we intensively discuss the contribution of
ubiquitous computing towards users’ well-being that covers both physical,
mental, and social wellness (and their combinations), from the viewpoints
of various different layers of computing. WellComp 2021 will bring together
researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to explore
versatile topics related to wellbeing and ubiquitous computing.
